The Young European Movement (YEM) was delighted to descend upon Glasgow last weekend, where members had the opportunity to participate in our Summer Social, containing a mixture of political and social activities.
Hosted in the breathtaking Glasgow City Hall, YEM President Klajdi Selimi opened the morning by introducing Cllr Declan Blench of the SNP, who educated us on the role of local government in Glasgow and the connection between Scotland and the European Project. Declan was succeeded by David McDonald from European Movement in Scotland (EMiS), who gave a fascinating presentation on the history of pro-Europeanism in Scotland and the role his organisation plays in repairing ties with Europe.
Members then had a unique opportunity to learn about the damages associated with the UK’s departure from Erasmus+ by hearing a testimony from Luís Gozes of the University of Glasgow. A senior lecturer in Portuguese Studies and a programme coordinator, Luís has experienced at first hand the decline in student exchange as a result of this decision, sharing a plethora of statistics.
Participants were treated to lunch in George’s Square, where they had the chance to get to know one another on a more personal level over coffee and sandwiches.
After lunch, Green Party Councillor Anthony Carroll led a session focusing on the role which the EU has played in combating climate change and restoring our natural environment, taking questions and hearing insights. Anthony was succeeded by Kaukab Stewart MSP, the first woman of colour to be elected to the Scottish Parliament, who shared a testimony on how she became involved in politics and how through a philosophy of internationalism we could defeat prejudice and inequality.
The afternoon was signed off with a questions and answers session with Dr. Mike Galsworthy, Founder of Scientists for Europe and Chair of European Movement UK. Mike told us about the need for more young people in the Movement and his unwavering support for YEM’s campaigning activities.
In the evening, participants met for a traditional Scottish dinner before enjoying the nightlife of Glasgow.
